Once you notice your child struggles with reading, you can communicate with your child’s school to explore the possibility of a response to the intervention plan. This is a strategy that offers various levels of instruction and research-based interventions that occur in the classroom. Often, a child can be diagnosed with a reading disorder based on their performance within the response to the intervention context. Currently, dyslexia is not considered a medical condition, unlike other conditions such as ADHD and autism. Therefore, specific testing for dyslexia is not covered by most insurers. However, many insurers do offer coverage for neuropsychological assessments, which is the type of assessment you will want to get in order to obtain an authoritative diagnosis.

The education history should include information on school attendance, tests administered and test scores. Standard scores compare the learner to others of the same age or grade. This should lead to a tentative diagnosis that states that the child’s ability to learn to read, write and spell does or does not appear to be related to dyslexia. The specific evidence that supports the diagnosis should be explained in the report. Confusion regarding terminology is also commonly coupled with confusion regarding identification procedures. It is a low-level language skill in that it does not involve meaning.

Dyslexia Testing and Assessment

Costs vary from one country to another, but speech pathologists tend to be highly paid professionals. Special education master’s degrees run about the same as speech pathology programs, even though they don’t generally get paid as much. Once again, the price of services needs to fairly compensate the professional. Many children reverse their letters when learning to write regardless of whether they have dyslexia.

Decoding is also called “word attack.” Decoding tests should use nonsense words to force the student to rely on these decoding skills rather than on memory for a word already learned. That’s especially true for dyslexia and other learning challenge assessments. However, the cost is justified when you consider the costs of professional services and overhead.

Students with dyslexia typically have adequate higher- level language skills. Indicators of higher-level oral language skills include being able to understand an age-appropriate story and spoken directions, to carry on a conversation, and to understand and use words that are age appropriate. If a student has average higher-level oral language skills but much difficulty developing written language skills, the need for evaluation for dyslexia is recommended. Documentation An effective evaluation documents the history of a student’s learning disability. One purpose of this documentation is to determine eligibility for special services, including special education.

Spelling is the opposite of word attack but is even more difficult.
